Cranberry sauce is one of the easier dishes to make on or around Thanksgiving and one of the reasons I love to make it in advance is because it freezes and thaws so well and it is one less dish you have to make the days leading up to the big day. I typically like to make this Apple Cranberry sauce 2-3 weeks in advance and just pop in my freezer, then take out the day before Thanksgiving. Easy as pie!

How to make homemade cranberry sauce

Canned cranberry sauce from the store just doesn’t compare to scratch cranberry sauce. You are going to love this simple and easy recipe. You would think that making homemade cranberry sauce was this huge labor of love taking hours to cook down because it is one of the prettiest side dishes with its bright red vibrant color, but in actuality its super easy and only uses one saucepan, a few ingredients and is done in under 30 minutes.

  1.  First wash your cranberries then peel and dice your apple into small squares. Toss those ingredients into your saucepan, then zest your orange and add the remaining ingredients.

  2. You’ll bring your saucepan to a boil, then reduce and allow to simmer on low/medium heat for about 20 minutes until the cranberries have popped and the sauce has thickened. If some of your cranberries are still whole, you can use a masher to smash the remaining few cranberries.

  3. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely and store in a glass jar until ready to serve or freeze in an airtight container and take out 24 hours before serving.

Can this be made Vegan?

It sure can, just replace the honey with Maple syrup.

How to serve

Cranberry sauce is great served over meats such as pork tenderloin, turkey and chicken, as an appetizer drizzled over a Brie and puff pastry or a stand-alone side dish; However you serve it it’s one of those dishes where everyone has their own preference for how they want to eat it, so typically I serve it at room temperature and with a spoon so my guests can eat as they desire.

Tip-Showcase those beautiful vibrant colors and serve in a clear glass jar or bowl.

How to store

Depending on when you make your sauce will determine how you store it. Cranberry sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for 5-7 days or the freezer for up to 4 months. Cranberry sauce freezes incredibly well, just make sure it is in an airtight container; either glass jar or seal a meal it and then take out the day before serving to thaw and enjoy.

Note: If you are freezing in a glass jar, be sure to leave 1-2 inches of room from the top to allow for expansion otherwise your container will break.
