The difference between avocado dip and guacamole can sometimes come down to the ripeness, affecting the final texture. However, for avocado relish, we’re aiming for a specific chunky texture, unlike the smoother consistency of guacamole or some avocado dips. Therefore, the ripeness you’re looking for will be slightly different. Here are some tips for picking the perfect avocado for your avocado relish:
Color– Pick a green avocado with a little purple in it. This is a nearly ripe avocado, but not quite ripe enough for guacamole.
Tenderness- Choose a slightly firm avocado with a little give. You want avocados that are ripe enough to have a creamy texture but still firm enough to hold their shape when diced.
Check the stem- If the stem is still attached, gently try to wiggle it off. If it comes off easily and you see bright green underneath, the avocado is likely at a good stage of ripeness for relish. If it’s difficult to remove or brown underneath, the avocado might be underripe or overripe.
While some of the ingredients are typical of what you would find in a guacamole, the firmness and chunkiness of the avocados are what makes this dish unique and more of a relish, so be sure to pick firm yet, slightly soft avocados and dice your avocados into small chunks.
Avocado
Cilantro
Onion
Garlic
Pickled Jalapeños + juice
Honey
Green onion
Lime
Salt
You can really mix this up and add/omit to your liking. This relish has a great base, and some options are listed below for you to mix it up.
Mango- Add in a cup of diced mangos for a sweet and spicy style mango avocado relish.
Tomatoes-Add in some fresh cherry or diced Roma tomatoes for a beautiful bright red color and for more of a traditional avocado salsa recipe.
Cucumbers- For another cool crisp and refreshing element, add in some diced cucumber. This will bulk up your relish and add some serious crunch to it.
White onion– Go ahead and replace that red onion with a white onion.
Dice-Dice avocado into small chunks.
Chop-Red onion, green onion, jalapeno, and finely chop cilantro and garlic. Add everything to a bowl.
Whisk-whisk together honey, pickled jalapeno juice, fresh lime juice and salt.
Mix & combine- Pour liquid mixture over avocado mixture and toss to coat.
Serve-Use this relish on top of tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, served with shrimp or even as a chip dip. Enjoy!
